Summary
Executive Summary
Solar energy is abundant and offers significant potential for near-term (2020) and long-term (2050) climate change mitigation. There are a wide variety of solar technologies of varying maturities that can, in most regions of the world, contribute to a suite of energy services. Even though solar energy generation still only represents a small fraction of total energy consumption, markets for solar technologies are growing rapidly. Much of the desirability of solar technology is its inherently smaller environmental burden and the opportunity it offers for positive social impacts. The cost of solar technologies has been reduced significantly over the past 30 years and technical advances and supportive public policies continue to offer the potential for additional cost reductions. Potential deployment scenarios range widely—from a marginal role of direct solar energy in 2050 to one of the major sources of energy supply. The actual deployment achieved will depend on the degree of continued innovation, cost reductions and supportive public policies.
Solar energy is the most abundant of all energy resources. Indeed, the rate at which solar energy is intercepted by the Earth is about 10,000 times greater than the rate at which humankind consumes energy. Although not all countries are equally endowed with solar energy, a significant contribution to the energy mix from direct solar energy is possible for almost every country. Currently, there is no evidence indicating a substantial impact of climate change on regional solar resources.

We have introduced various nanopowders in the precursor of glassy polymeric carbon (GPC) and studied its electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties as well as its chemical structure. In general the GPC ware produced at AAMU is used for making crucibles, heat exchangers, and for prosthetic devices because of its biocompatibility. GPC ware at AAMU is synthesized from a phenolic resin solution from Georgia Pacific in a pyrolyser system at temperatures between 100 °C all the way to 2800 °C. The heat treatment includes several stages: gelling, curing, postcuring, precarbonization and carbonization. The fabrication of GPC is complicated because of the high production rate of gaseous products in critical temperature ranges where out-diffusion is relatively slow. Special care should be taken in temperature programming to avoid kilning faults and misshapen or porous GPC end results. In this work we have introduced SiC, CNT or Al2O3 to the precursor and studied the properties of the final product treated at 1000oC pyrolysis temperature.

Polymeric carbon artifacts are particularly difficult to make in thick section. Heating rate, temperature, and sample thickness determine the outcome of carbonization of resin leading to a glassy polymeric carbon ware. Using wedge-shaped samples, we found the maximum thickness for various heating rates during gelling (300 K–360 K), curing (360 K–400 K), postcuring (400 K–500 K), and precarbonization (500 K–875 K). Excessive heating rate causes failure. In postcuring the critical heating rate varies inversely as the fifth power of thickness; in precarbonization this varies inversely as the third power of thickness. From thermogravimetric evidence we attribute such failure to low rates of diffusion of gaseous products of reactions occurring within the solid during pyrolysis. Mass spectrometry shows the main gaseous product is water vapor; some carboniferous gases are also evolved during precarbonization. We discuss a diffusion model applicable to any heat-treatment process in which volatile products are removed from solid bodies.

The thermal diffusivities of (Hg1−xCdx)1−yTey and (Hg1−xZnx)1−yTeywith 0.55 ≤ y ≤ 1.0 and 0.0125 ≤ x ≤ 0.05465 and of pure Te are measured over a wide temperature range by the laser flash technique. The diffusivity of near pseudobinary Hg1−xCdxTe solids decrease more rapidly with temperature approaching the melting point than pseudobinary solids previously reported. The solid diffusivity for x=0.02817 is 0.83 mm2/s at 371°C, decreasing to 0.22 mm2/s at 614°C. The diffusivity of Te rich (Hg1−xCdx)1−yTey melt increases with x and with temperature. The melt diffusivity for x=0.03934 is 0.91 mm2/s at 485°C, increasing to 4.93 mm2/s at 851°C. For Te rich (Hg1−xZnx)1−yTey melt with x=0.0125 and y=0.7944 there appears to be a minimum diffusivity of about 2.6 mm2/s near 700°C. The thermal diffusivity of pure Te solid is 0.97 mm2/s at 300°C and decreases to 0.64 mm2/s at 439°C. The melt diffusivity is 1.52 mm2/s at 486°C, increasing to 3.48 mm2/s at 584°C.
